Chinese New Year in Singapore
Video by Noshivore (17 minutes):
Singapore celebrates Chinese New Year with a few customs that are unique to Singapore.
Everything is done with a view to wishing everyone a prosperous new year, with good luck and good fortune for the coming year.
And there's lots of food and goodies.
Traditionally, in the old country (China), people work hard throughout the year. There is no 5-day week or even 6-day week. There is no one day off a week. No, people work 350 days (approximately) a year.
Then on New Year's Eve, shops and businesses closed early, so everyone can go home to have Reunion dinner with their families.
This is followed by 15 days of rest and celebrations. All businesses and shops and restaurants are closed for the 15 days of the Chinese New Year.
Everybody is in a celebratory mood.
So prior to CNY, everyone stocks up on New Year's goodies - cookies, cakes, meats, preserved dishes, waxed meat, etc... These will keep people fed for the 15 days while the shops and markets are closed.
If you want to catch Singapore during the Chinese New Year, check when the next one will be (CNY in 2025 was from Jan 29 to Feb 12.)
My Google search suggests that CNY in 2026 starts on 17 Feb 2026.
